Introduction and who we are

Farms Not Factories, is a not for profit organisation working through film-making and campaigning to support the ‘food sovereignty’ movement by exposing the true costs of cheap meat from animal factories to inspire consumers to only buy meat from local, healthy, high welfare farms.

We are committed to protecting your privacy and security. 

Whenever you provide personal information to us, we will treat that information in accordance with this notice and current data protection law. 

What personal information do we collect?

We get personal information from a handful different sources. This includes via our websites, social media channels & newsletters. 

Our legal bases for using your information

Under data protection law, we must give you information about the bases we are relying on to process your personal information. These are set out below. 

Legitimate interests:  This means that the use of personal information is necessary for legitimate interests except when the individual’s interests and fundamental rights override those legitimate interests.  Legitimate interests covers most of the activities of Farms Not Factories.  In particular, Farms Not Factories has a legitimate interest in:

  • Promoting its objects and activities, specifically, to promote interest in only buying meat sourced from high welfare farms;
  • Raising funds for our activities and ensuring that there is an active community of supporters for what we do. This means that we can do more to support our objects and activities;
  • Providing education and increasing awareness around high welfare farming and produce;
  • Protecting our reputation (for example, if someone was misusing our intellectual property)

Contract: This means that the use of personal information is necessary in order to perform our obligations under our contract with you and for you to perform your obligations as well.

Consent: Sometimes we are relying on consent to process your personal information. This will be the case for certain types of fundraising communications.  For example, we usually need your consent before sending you a fundraising email. If you give your consent, you have a right to withdraw it at any time.  Any use of your information before you withdraw your consent remains valid. 

Promoting Farms Not Factories and the work we do

We use personal information to promote Farms Not Factories and the work we do:

  • To keep you informed about any relevant events and activities
  • To keep you informed about what is happening. For example, by sending you our newsletters;
  • In connection with providing financial support to the Charity. This includes donations. 
  • In connection with the other ways in which you might support us (such as when you volunteer); and

We may contact you for the above purposes by email and through social media but we will only do so where this is allowed under data protection law.  If you tell us that you do not want to be contacted for any of these purposes then we will of course respect that.  You can withdraw your consent at any time. 

We may also contact individuals who we think would help us promote the work we do.  For example, we may contact bloggers, influences and journalists to ask them if they wold like to participate in campaigns and share stories. 

We often use photographs for marketing and promotion purposes.  This will include in our newsletters, in social media and on our websites.  Where we consider doing so is necessary, we will seek your consent before using the photograph.

Our website

When someone visits our website we use a third party service, Google Analytics, to collect standard internet log information and details of visitor behaviour patterns. We do this to find out things such as the number of visitors to the various parts of the site. This information is only processed in a way which does not identify anyone. We do not make, and do not allow Google to make, any attempt to find out the identities of those visiting our website. If we do want to collect personally identifiable information through our website, we will be up front about this. We will make it clear when we collect personal information and will explain why we are collecting it and what we intend to do with it.

We will use the information we collect through your interaction with our website to improve our websites and campaigns outreach.

This is for our legitimate interest in giving you content which is relevant to you and making sure that our website runs smoothly. 

E-newsletter

We use a third party provider, Mailchimp, to deliver our e-newsletters. We gather statistics around email opening and clicks using industry standard technologies including clear gifs to help us monitor and improve our e-newsletter. For more information, please see Mailchimps privacy notice.

We will:

  • Only send you regular information about our organisation, campaigns and appeals
  • Send you occasional urgent news flashes when we deem appropriate
  • Provide an obvious unsubscribe link on every email we send
  • Never sell, trade or otherwise pass on your details

Your rights

Your rights in your information are as follows:

Rectification:if information we hold about you is incorrect you can ask us to correct it.

Access:you can also ask what information we hold about you and be provided with a copy of it.  This is commonly known as making a subject access request. 

Deletion:you can ask us to delete the information that we hold about you in certain circumstances.  For example, where we no longer need the information.

Restriction:  our use of information about you may be restricted in some cases.  For example, if you tell us that the information is inaccurate we can only use it for limited purposes while we check its accuracy.
